In February of this year, I joined Andrea’s mat classes in an attempt to repair tissue and joint damage in my shoulder from a fall. Within a few weeks, I was able to regain almost all of the mobility and eventually the strength in my upper arm began to return. Better physical conditioning was my primary goal. But as the weeks past, I began to notice something very different from the hundreds of aerobic and cardio classes I had taken in the past. There was no more pounding and running and flinging arms and legs or shin splints . The movement of Pilates exercise was more precise and controlled, and what has come out of that is an entirely new body shape, new body movement fluidity, new body strength and tightness. Muscles are becoming long and lean. My midsection s p r e a d has virtually disappeared!!! I am able to stretch to lengths that were achievable over 30 years ago. Most importantly there is this wonderful combination of intense muscle control, mental concentration and relaxation, all working together. I walk straighter, I bend easier, all the morning stiffness is gone. All of it!!!! At 50, I feel like 30, and I am committed to feeling fabulous. Andrea Jackson’s amazing teaching style, her beautiful studio space and her positive encouragement to each and every one of the students is the reason I do this everyday. I learn something new about the body in each class and have come to appreciate through Andrea just how amazing the body is. Its like a machine….. Andrea’s classes are a wonderful experience and while I feel great calm and invigoration after each class, I also recognize I have so much further to go. When I first started doing Pilates with AJ Pilates 6 years ago it became evident very quickly that this was the form of exercise that would take me into my golden years feeling strong mentally and physically. Like brushing my teeth it has become a part of my daily regime. No other form of exercise has provided me with a balance of strength in my entire body. Every bone and muscle including the mind is given attention. Every class is slightly different without ignoring the importance of core strengthening. For the first time in my life I can honestly say that I am more mindful of the interconnectedness of every part of my body.
